the washington sketchbook

The Washington Sketchbook, Drawings by R. L. Dickinson from 1917–18 (Fall 2006) In 1918 Dr. Robert L. Dickinson (1861–1950) came to Washington, D.C., to serve in the Army's medical section as it mobilized for World War One. In his free time he hiked and camped along the Potomac and sketched his favorite places. Only recently did these lost drawings surface in a handmade album in the Library of Congress archives.

The Washington Sketchbook presents fifty of Dickinson's delightful drawings and watercolors along with descriptions of their historic settings. The book includes a short biography of Dickinson, who was a prominent physician, birth control activist, and contributor to medical research, in addition to being an accomplished artist.
